Old Wives Tales - Are You Having a Boy or Girl?
Some expectant parents definitely want to know the gender of their unborn baby while others enjoy the element of surprise. At the routine 20 week ultrasound those who wish to know may have the perfect opportunity....providing the baby is cooperating and legs aren't crossed. Also, it is very important to know that ultrasounds are not a solid guarantee.
There are many old wives tales in predicting gender. I would like to share a few with you:
Drano Test - Old Wives tale states to pee in a cup of Drano. If the mixture turns brown, it's believed you're having a girl. It the mixture turns blue, it's a boy.
Ring String Test - Take a wedding ring and place in on a string. Dangle the string in front of the pregnant belly. If it moves in circular motion, it's believed you are carrying a girl. If it moves in a pendulum motion, it's believed you are carrying a boy.
Heartrate Test - In this old wives tale, you would take the baby's heartrate in beat per minute by using a dopple or a fetoscope. If the heartrate is under 140, you'll be shopping for trucks whereas if the heartrate is over 140, you'll be shopping for frilly dresses.
Chinese Fertitilty Chart - Supposedly the chart was created by a Chinese scientist and then buried in a tomb near Bejing for 700 years. The Institute of Science in Bejing now has the chart available for viewing. Amazingly, the results are just near accurate. To determine the gender of your unborn child, you would take the age of the mother at time of conception as well as the month in which the baby was conceived. For example, if the mother was 27 at time of conception and she conceived in the month of May, she would be expecting a baby girl.

Of course, nothing is 100% accurate until the big day comes and the doctor announces:
"It's a boy" or "It's a girl."

I confess! We tried the ring test and yes it did work. Of course at the time we didn't believe it but the ultrasound confirmed it.
There's another old wives tale that states if you want a boy, the man should eat a lot of broccoli!! We always tease my husband about this because he loves broccoli. We have one son...apparently the broccoli didn't work the second time around..we also have a daughter!
